Understanding Animals and Insurance: The Key to Better Protection

Pet Damage Insurance 🐾

Our four-legged friends bring us so much joy, but they can also sometimes cause minor—or even major—damage. Fortunately, your home insurance protects you if your pet damages other people’s property or causes injury.

What if your pet misbehaves?

What if your dog bites a neighbor, breaks a door, or causes an accident? Does your cat knock over a precious vase at a friend’s house?

In these cases, your civil liability insurance may cover the costs of property damage or bodily injury. The good news is that this protection follows you everywhere, not just at home!

There are some limitations to be aware of

Certain breeds of dogs considered “high-risk” (e.g., pit bulls and Rottweilers) may be excluded or limited.

Damage to your own property, such as a chewed sofa or scratched carpet, is not covered.

Exotic or dangerous animals may also not be accepted.

What does this mean in practice?

Your home insurance will cover liability if your dog knocks over and injures a cyclist or if your cat knocks over your neighbor’s TV. However, it will not cover you if your dog destroys your sofa or if your rare parrot escapes and you request a refund.
What about pet health insurance?

Some insurance companies also offer coverage for veterinary care (consultations, surgery, medication). It’s not the same coverage, but it’s often a good supplement to keep your pets healthy.

Finally, your home insurance protects you if your pet causes damage to others, but it does not cover damage to your own property… or the value of your pet itself.
