Insuring Your Young Driver: What You Need to Know

Having a young driver in the family brings a mix of emotions, pride… and insurance premiums that rise faster than their speedometer. Before you panic, here are the key things you need to understand to make the right choices.

1️⃣ Why does it cost more?

Let’s be honest: for an insurer, a driver aged 16 to 24 = statistically higher risk. Lack of experience, developing reflexes, more frequent distractions… The result: the premium reflects this risk.

Factors that influence the price:

  • Age and gender
  • Type of vehicle
  • Place of residence
  • Driving record
  • Use (school, work, annual mileage)

A brand new sports SUV? Bad idea.
A used, reliable, and reasonable sedan? Much more strategic.

2️⃣ Should you add them to your policy or get them their own?

We have two options:

A. If the vehicle belongs to you, register it in your name

  • The deductible and coverage remain yours
  • You are jointly and severally liable for the driver
  • The young driver could be the primary or occasional driver, depending on their use and the number of cars you own

B. If the vehicle belongs to them, register it in their name

  • Allows them to build their own history
  • Financial independence (and accountability)

3️⃣ Essential coverage you shouldn’t overlook

At a minimum:

  • Sufficient civil liability (in Quebec, $2 million is often recommended)

In addition:

  • Collision and overturn coverage if the vehicle has real value
  • All risks coverage except collision or overturn

Saving money by cutting back on coverage can be very costly in the event of an accident. Balance is key.

4️⃣ How to reduce your premium wisely

Yes, there are concrete ways to reduce your premium:

✔️ Choose a modest vehicle
✔️ Higher deductible (if financially viable)
✔️ Telematics programs (monitored driving via app)

The best way to save money? Don’t make any claims.

5️⃣ The importance of family discussion

Insurance for a young driver isn’t just a bill.
It’s an opportunity to talk about:

  • Financial responsibilities
  • The consequences of an accident
  • The impact of a violation over several years

A single at-fault accident can affect premiums for approximately 6 years. That deserves a clear conversation.

Insuring a young driver costs more, yes. But with the right coverage, the right vehicle, and a thoughtful strategy, you can avoid unpleasant surprises.

The important thing is not to pay as little as possible. It’s to pay the right price to be well protected. One of our brokers will be happy to answer any questions you may have. 1-800-360-6880
