A significant improvement, but the number is still high.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to data from insurers (Equity Association and Insurance Bureau of Canada), Statistics Canada and SPVM, these figures represent a decrease of 32% in Quebec and 18.6% in Canada. The Greater Montreal area alone will see a drop of around 25% in car thefts by 2024.<\/p>\n<h3>Why the drop?<\/h3>\n<p>We can attribute this drop to a number of coordinated efforts, such as the strengthening of police investigations and cooperation between insurers, customs and law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of public action, we should mention the intervention plans launched in early 2024, notably in Quebec and Ontario. Added to this is the increase in recoveries (43.6% in Quebec), despite the fact that a third of stolen vehicles are never recovered.<\/p>\n<h3>Some practical tips to prevent theft<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Equip yourself with a Faraday box for the smart key. This blocks the signal and prevents theft by relay.<\/li>\n<li>Lock the OBD (diagnostics) port to prevent access to the on-board computer.<\/li>\n<li>Install an anti-theft bar on the steering wheel: a visible deterrent.<\/li>\n<li>An immobilizer (or fuel cut-off) will prevent unauthorized starting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And last but not least, why not equip your vehicle with a GPS tracking system, to help you recover it after a theft.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2024, Quebec saw a marked decrease in car thefts, from around 15,000 thefts in 2023 to 10,000 thefts in 2024.
